How to Contribute
There are many things which would make this site a more useful for everybody, and I'd like to spend as much time as possible on actual software development. If you like this project, and would like to help with any of these, please get in touch:- Slice up recordings of mbiras into single samples. More than 70 instruments from ILAM's instrument collection are waiting to be heard! Read the call for crowdsourcing. Here's a video tutorial on how it's done (takes approx. 15-30 minutes per instrument).
- Create key-by-key recordings of mbiras in different tunings and pitches (takes approx. 15 minutes per instrument, once things are set up). Here's a little how-to and a few tips. Specifically, I'm looking for people with mbiras in
- Old "one of a kind" tunings
- "Mazingizi" tuning
- a set of "mbira orchestra" instruments
- Create a video tutorial for any of these:
- How to record an instrument key-by-key in good quality.
- Creating and editing transcriptions (basically any section of the Help page).
- How to transcribe audio recordings and videos.
- Transcribe music from public sources
- While music which is actively taught by someone - especially traditional musicians - should not be made public without explicit consent of the teacher, there is plenty of material available in publications, on recordings and on Youtube. Please help to make more transcriptions available.
- Improve writing and terminology
- I'm not an English native speaker. If you come across anything that could be improved, even a single paragraph, sentence or typo, please don't hesitate and send me a quick note.
- Currently we have "pieces" with one or many "parts", which consist of "tracks" and "pulses". I'd love to discuss the pros and cons of alternative terminology (e.g. "song", "tune", "tabulature").
- Better Visual Design
- Can you help making this site look better?
